Meet Dynasha Haynes '06

Lawrence School, Class of 2006
Ohio University, Class of 2010

What led you back to Lawrence after graduation?
After graduating from Lawrence School in 2006, I obtained a Bachelor’s degree in special education with a minor in business administration from Ohio University. I worked as a middle school teacher in Muskegon Heights, Michigan. However, I missed my hometown, so I decided to move back to Cleveland. Shortly after, I saw an opening at Lawrence School, my heart skipped a beat, and the rest is history!

When did you know you wanted to be a teacher?
I’ve always loved working with children, even when I was very young. As a child, I would gather my sister and our friends to play school. Teaching is just something that’s always resonated within me. I love witnessing the pride of accomplishment when new skills are mastered.

What did you bring to the Lawrence classroom, based on your previous experience as a Lawrence student?
I struggled in school prior to enrollment at Lawrence. But once I became a Lawrence student, I excelled and my teachers inspired a level of confidence in me that I didn't know existed. When I returned as a teacher myself, I knew that many of my students would have a similar history of struggle. This was very relatable to me and I felt it my personal responsibility to further inspire confidence and unlock potential.

What is your fondest Lawrence memory, as a teacher?
It's almost unfair to ask me to choose because I have so many great memories! But narrowing it down, I'd have to say graduation day. I absolutely adore the memories I have of honoring my past students who worked so hard to experience that joy. It’s an exciting time and also an emotional testament of how much they had accomplished while attending Lawrence. I always hold memories of that day dear to my heart.

What is your fondest Lawrence memory, as a student?
Funny—my favorite memories as a student were all outside of the classroom! I'd say special events and activities, class trips, field trips, school dances, etc.

What are you currently up to?
I left my teaching position at Lawrence to devote more time to my family. I currently work from home as an insurance underwriter for Medical Mutual. My husband and I have a 2-year-old daughter and we are in the process of adopting my 4-year-old nephew and 3-year-old niece.

What advice would you give current students?
1. Get involved! Sports, clubs, youth groups, any kind of program that connects you with others who have similar interests will help you make friends and feel a sense of belonging. 2. Be yourself! If you are trying to be someone you’re not, it’ll weigh on you. 3. Set a goal, dream big, and work hard! Trust me when I tell you... nothing is ever impossible with hard work!
