We believe all Lawrence School students are leaders, and successful leaders understand the importance of continuous learning. We are proud to share that several of our student leaders have volunteered to travel to the 2023 NAIS Student Diversity Leadership Conference (SDLC) in St. Louis from Nov. 29 to Dec. 2. This four-day event is a multiracial, multicultural gathering of student leaders from across the U.S. and abroad.
The SDLC emphasizes self-reflection, allyship, and community building. Our Lawrence representatives will bring back strategies to enhance communication effectively across cultures and implement promoting social justice through the arts and dialogue and a new understanding of allyship. Our student leaders want to use this to cultivate an environment encouraging inclusivity and support. Continue reading to hear more about their “why” for attending the SDLC.
“I want to attend the student diversity conference to see how others have broken this stigma and how they would define diversity themselves. I want to educate myself on others and the different communities around me. I believe everyone deserves the same respect, and I would like to attend to find how better to build a community and a more inclusive world.” – Oscar '25
“I want to participate in the student diversity leadership program because I would love to learn more about the different communities out there and to understand my community.” – Makayla '24
“There are many reasons why I want to attend the NAIS Student Diversity Leadership Conference. It's hard to narrow it down to just one but, at the core, attending the conference will help me expand my viewpoint of the world we live in, develop leadership skills, and better communicate with others.” – Mary Helen '26
“I have a deep love of learning about others and experiences because the more I learn about others, the more I can understand and empathize with them. I’ve read so many memoirs about others’ experiences, but I can’t grasp their emotions as well from reading. You grasp their emotions a lot better if you talk to them in person, which will make you understand their experiences on a deeper level. I will carry the things I may learn from the conference for the rest of my life.” – Echo '24
