Middle School Division Shines at Annual Convocation

Each year, we have the unique opportunity to recognize each of our students at the Upper School campus in a personalized and meaningful way. Last night, students from our Middle School division were celebrated at the 17th Annual Convocation in the Upper School gym.

In front of family and friends, each student received a Compass Award. Compass Awards are intended to reinforce the values that Lawrence School believes are important and hopes all students will embrace and strive to achieve. The eight character traits we celebrate include: Courage, Scholarship, Fellowship, Integrity, Perseverance, Leadership, Advocacy, and Compassion.

Members of the school's faculty, staff and leadership council carefully select the Compass Award that we believe best represents each student's unique contributions and achievements during the academic year.

The Middle School Convocation speaker was Justin Jones '19, who will graduate from Lawrence on May 24. In addition to receiving a Compass Award, six students were presented the major awards listed below. Congratulations to all our Middle School division honorees!

2019 Middle School Convocation Major Award Winners

Academic Achievement Award – Alyssa Collier '23
The Academic Achievement Award is presented to a student who demonstrates a high level of academic excellence. The student receiving this award has consistently maintained a true commitment to academic excellence by demonstrating hard work, perseverance, and initiative on a daily basis.

Pride of Lawrence Award – Lucy Johnson '23
This student exemplifies the qualities we expect to find at Lawrence School – someone who recognizes and celebrates differences; shows respect and consideration to others; encourages others to be the best they can be both through actions and encouraging words; offers friendship to new students; and can be counted on to offer both students and teachers alike assistance whenever needed.

Rising Star Award – Teddy Soltesz '23
The Rising Star Award is presented to a student who demonstrates a strong commitment to the overall betterment of the school community. This student consistently contributes to the community in meaningful ways in all three areas previously addressed (campus life, student life and academia). To achieve all of this requires that a student do more than simply be present at school. They must contribute directly to the creation of a positive, supportive and fun school environment by daily action and word.

Social & Self-Awareness Award – Xavier Jolly '23
The Social & Self-Awareness Award is given to the student who shows tremendous growth and continued improvement either socially, emotionally, or behaviorally. The student should be someone who faced adversities and challenges and has either met those challenges or has taken clear decisive steps to begin to do so.

Teamwork & Team Building Award – Graham Tobin '24
The Teamwork & Team Building Award is designed to honor those students who go above and beyond in their pursuit to serve as a team player in and out of the classroom. The Teamwork & Team Building Award also recognizes the role this student plays in each the campus life areas: Athletics, Student Leadership, Extra Curricular Activities, and Visual and Performing Arts. Individuals who are honored with the Teamwork & Team Building Award are students who not only appreciate and benefit from these activities, but through their impassioned involvement, make a significant impact on the culture of student life at Lawrence School.

The Lou Salza Headmaster's Book Prize – Javier Brewer '23
The Lou Salza Headmaster's Book Prize is presented to a student who emulates Lou's love of assistive technology. Lou's own journey and eventual discovery of the benefits of assistive technology was a personal "game changer." The student receiving this award is someone who not only appreciates and benefits from the use of assistive technology, but through perseverance and determination, is achieving academic excellence.
