With Head of School Doug Hamilton’s announcement that he will be retiring at the end of June 2027, after nearly 38 years at Lawrence and nine years as our dedicated Head of School, the Board of Trustees has launched a national search for the next Head of School to begin on July 1, 2027.
The Board has appointed a Head of School Search Committee, representative of the school community, that will shepherd the process with the assistance of our search consultants, Jay Underwood and Garet Libbey of Educational Directions. We will keep this page updated as the search progresses, and we invite you to contact Jay or Garet with suggestions of outstanding educators who might be interested in becoming our next Head of School and/or questions about the process.

I am writing with an exciting update about our Head of School search process. As you know, the Board and Search Committee engaged a leading firm, Educational Directions, to guide us through a national search for our new Head of School.
Following our update in April, I am writing to share the exciting progress we have made in the search for our next Head of School. First, I would like to thank everyone who participated in our recent community input sessions and completed our survey.
I am writing to you as the Chair of the Head of School Search Committee to share an update on the search for our next head of school. As you may be aware, Doug Hamilton shared his intention to retire as head of school on June 30, 2027, following what will be nearly 38 years of service to Lawrence.
In every school’s story, there are a few names that become woven into its very fabric. At Lawrence, one of those names is Doug Hamilton. With deep gratitude and more than a little bittersweet emotion, the Board of Trustees announces that Doug has shared with us his intention to retire as Head of School on June 30, 2027.
