As an eighth grader, Zarina “Z” Fader stepped onto the court as a member of the Lions’ varsity basketball team, eager to contribute. Little did she know she was about to embark on a legendary career that would forever etch her name in Lawrence School history.
And so, on Jan. 6, Lawrence celebrated the culmination of Fader’s career, retiring her No. 5 jersey in a ceremony that honored her remarkable achievements.
“I never imagined this would happen to me,” Fader said. “This is something that happens to NBA players. I’m just so happy and thankful.”
Fader was joined by her mother and younger brother Max, as well as alumni from the classes of 2020-2024 attending the Young Alum Lunch, including some of Fader's former Lion teammates.
“It was very special,” Fader added. “I’m glad my mom and brother were there to see it. My mom was crying happy tears, and my brother came up and hugged me. It was great.”
One of the most decorated athletes to ever wear the black and green, Fader, who graduated in 2023, holds the school records for points scored, 3-pointers made, and steals. She amassed 1,547 points throughout her career, earning her the Lake Effect Conference’s Most Valuable Player award twice. Additionally, she was a two-time MaxPreps Ohio High School Athlete of the Week and recognized twice on both the Associated Press All-District First Team and the All-Ohio Division IV Team.
Fader dominated her junior and senior seasons, averaging 38 points per game, number one in Ohio for consecutive seasons. During that stretch, she had three 50-point games, including a 54-point performance.
Her clutch performances under pressure and unwavering focus in the face of adversity made her a true leader on and off the court. But beyond the numbers, it was Fader’s leadership and sportsmanship that truly set her apart.
“She had the unique ability to elevate those around her, pushing her teammates to give their best while always keeping the spirit of teamwork and camaraderie alive,” said Lawrence Varsity Girls’ Basketball Coach and Director of Athletics, Bryan Cioffoletti. “She is a role model who embodies the core values of Lawrence School: integrity, perseverance, and community. Whether it was mentoring younger players or excelling in her academic pursuits, Zarina has shown us all what it means to be a champion in every sense of the word.”
Following Lawrence, Fader played a season at Cuyahoga Community College, where she averaged eight points per game and totaled 252 points.
Her message to aspiring athletes?
“If you have a dream or goal, the only person stopping you is you,” she said. “With hard work and dedication, you can achieve that goal. Never stop striving to be the best version of yourself.”
