Get to know Courtney in this Q&A.
What motivates you to excel in this position?
Drawing on my personal experiences as a parent of a child with learning differences, combined with my background as a school counselor and understanding our students’ academic and daily lives, I can truly empathize with the challenges families face. Many parents approach us with feelings of pain, fear, and confusion, and it’s an amazing feeling to be able to guide and counsel them through this process.
In your opinion, what sets Lawrence apart from other schools?
Lawrence is different in so many ways. One of the main ways that I think it’s different is not only do we serve the whole child in the truest sense of the meaning of the word, but we understand how these children learn where nobody else in our current educational system does. We are truly able to meet students and families where they are, providing them with the tools to reach their full potential.
Many students come to us with traumatic educational experiences. They have not had the best experience in school, so they might not trust educators. From the moment they step foot in the school, every single person they interact with strives to create a safe and welcoming environment.
What is the most rewarding part of your job?
I cherish the opportunities to connect with families and students. From the moment a parent calls, even if Lawrence School isn’t the best place for their student, it’s still rewarding in the fact that I get to talk with these families and be a part of their journey in finding what is best for their child. And if I can be a resource to them in any other way, even if it’s outside of Lawrence, that’s extremely rewarding to me.
When Lawrence is able to meet a student’s needs, the impact is just magnified exponentially. I’ve witnessed firsthand how families can go from feeling overwhelmed to hopeful. When I see a new student walk through the doors at Lawrence for the first time, I get emotional about it because I really do feel like this is what I’m supposed to be doing. This is where these kids are supposed to be, and I feel really lucky that I get to be part of that process of bringing them into the school.
