Dear Lawrence Community,
The winter athletic season has started at the Upper School, and we are proud of our athletic program that aims to instill positive habits and attitudes in our students. More than 70% of Lawrence Lions from grades 7-12 participate in at least one sport, with a variety of sports available, including baseball, softball, cross country, swimming, golf, volleyball, basketball, cheerleading, soccer, and eSports. Recently, I had the opportunity to listen to how Lawrence athletics has impacted our students as athletes and individuals.
"I have always enjoyed participating in sports and giving my all. A particular accomplishment I am proud of is being awarded First Team All-Conference in basketball during my sophomore year. The camaraderie between my teammates and coaches has been the highlight of my athletic experience at Lawrence. One of the biggest challenges I faced as an athlete occurred last season when we finished with a 1-15 record. Despite the rough season, we continued to show up to practice and worked hard, which ultimately helped us to improve and prepare for the following season. I lead by example and provide constructive feedback to my teammates. We all share the same goal, which is to win, and that is motivation enough. Our coaches are adept at utilizing our strengths and masking our weaknesses, as well as scouting our opponents. My advice to anyone who wants to improve their performance is to work just as hard during the off-season as they do during the season." – Dominic '25
"Inspiring, challenging, and motivating are three words I'd use to describe my experience with Lawrence athletics. My coaches and teammates inspire me to keep going and make changes every day. I feel challenged to do my best in every practice and game, even though it's tough sometimes and easy to get frustrated. I'm also motivated to always show school spirit on and off the court or field. One athletic accomplishment I am proud of is my academic awards for volleyball and basketball, including Most Improved, which I received in both sports. One of my favorite parts of my Lawrence athletic experience is my team because even when we lose, we have a positive mindset. A big challenge I faced and overcame was when I first signed up to play basketball in eighth grade. I had never played on a team before, but my teammates and coaches worked with me and made my experience so much easier and better. I would describe my leadership approach and style as quiet, approaching others with kindness and willingness to help however I can. I try to inspire my teammates to deliver their best performance by showing them they are strong and can do it. My team's core strength is a commitment to work hard to achieve our goals as a team. The advice I would give incoming Lawrence students is to join a team you are interested in and be prepared to have fun and work hard so that you can achieve your goals. I've had the best time in the world being part of the Lady Lions at Lawrence." – Clara '26

Our athletes acquire valuable skills in cooperation and self-control while also having the opportunity to challenge themselves and surpass their limitations.
