LION Locker Room: Meet Ethan

Ethan B. came to Lawrence in the sixth grade and has been wowing us in the classroom and on the diamond ever since. A member of the Class of 2021, this honor roll student just signed on to continue his baseball career as a Malone Pioneer. We are all looking forward to Ethan and the rest of the Lions Baseball team safely returning to Hadgis Field this spring.

When did you begin playing ball?
I began my baseball career playing tee ball at the age of five. When I turned nine, I began playing travel ball and have continued ever since. As a high school freshman, I played Varsity for Lawrence and was named to the Lake Effect Conference first team all conference. Last summer, I was named to the All Diamond League second team. The Diamond League is widely recognized as the most competitive summer travel league in Northeast Ohio. While many coaches have helped me to get this point, I owe a special thanks to Coach Suhay of the Ohio Impact Longhorns, Coach Ryan Rua of the T3 Rays, and Coach Thompson of both Lawrence School and Players I Bulls. These men have been absolutely essential in preparing me for college ball.

What position do you play?
I’ve played literally every position, including pitcher and catcher, at some point in my career. However, for the last two seasons I’ve pitched and played infield exclusively. My favorite position to play is third base, because you have to react quickly to the ball and make the long throw across the diamond.

How has the pandemic affected your sport?
Last season was completely canceled to keep everyone safe, but I didn’t stop training. Thankfully, my coaches made themselves available to help players maintain and sharpen their skills.

What life lessons have you learned through Lawrence’s athletic program?
I’ve learned so many valuable life lessons about teamwork, discipline, perseverance, and the importance of having fun! These have all been key to my success as a baseball player and have helped off the field (in school) tremendously.

Who is your favorite major league player or team?
My favorite MLB team is the Washington Nationals, and my favorite player is Bryce Harper. I like his hitting style, aggressiveness, and dedication to his skills. He’s also a really confident guy and I admire that.

What are you most looking forward to next year at Malone University?
I probably should say learning and expanding my knowledge base… but what I’m really looking forward to is MORE BASEBALL! I can’t wait for the chance to travel with the team and improve my overall game. I’m also looking forward to being more independent as a college student, and meeting new and interesting people on campus.

What will you miss the most about Lawrence School?
I'm really going to miss seeing my teachers every day. We've gotten very close and I hope to stay in contact with them. I will definitely come back to visit!
