Achieving an Eagle Scout rank is the highest honor attainable in the Boy Scouts of America program. In fact, since the beginning of the program in 1911, only four percent of Boy Scouts have achieved their Eagle Scout status.
Famous Eagle scouts include our 38th President Gerald R. Ford, Academy Award-winning writer and film director Steven Spielberg, and pioneering astronaut Neil Armstrong.
After earning more than 42 merit badges – which is double the required amount, Lawrence junior Nicholas Kuchar '20 joined this elite group last month. In addition to the 21-badge requirement, scouts must be of good standing, have a positive attitude, and create and execute a lengthy service project to be a candidate for an Eagle Scout.
Nicholas has held numerous leadership positions within the organization, including Den Chief Pack 3380, Assistant Patrol Leader, Patrol Leader, and Assistant Senior Patrol Leader. He also received a number of awards, including the Ad Altare Dei Religious award (2016), the Order of the Arrow award (2016), and the Order of the Arrow for Brotherhood award (2017). Additionally, he was presented the Top Popcorn Seller Great Trail Council award in 2009.
Part of the esteem of being a Boy Scout is the ability to go on week-long High Adventure trips. To attain his Scout Honor, Nicholas participated in four of these trips: the High Knoll Trail, Great Allegheny Passage (Bike Trip), Philmont Scout Ranch, and Boundary Water (canoe trip).
For the extensive service project requirement, Nicholas chose to beautify an area close to home. At Richfield Woods Park, he removed two flat top benches that had rotted, and replaced them with new benches he built. He also removed and replaced planters that had been damaged over time, and planted flowers provided by the Village of Richfield (see photo below).
Congratulations Nicholas! We are amazed by your work ethic, dedication and commitment to make the world a better place!
