Associate Psychologist

Full Time (32 hours/week with comprehensive benefits package)
12-Month Employee, Schafer Center for Learning Differences, Broadview Heights

Make a difference every day! The Schafer Center at Lawrence School seeks a highly-qualified, collaborative, and empowering psychologist.

For more than 50 years, Lawrence School has delivered academic excellence to students with dyslexia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia, and ADHD. Located in the Lower School building, the Ethan D. Schafer Center for Learning Differences was established in 2006 to advance psychological training and provide exceptional services for Northeast Ohio students. The Schafer Center evaluates learning and psychological needs, educates students and professionals, and navigates families to appropriate resources and services.

The Schafer Center also serves as a training program for clinical psychology doctoral students from Case Western Reserve University and Kent State University. Graduate students work under the direct supervision of the Center’s licensed clinical psychologists in accordance with the scientist-practitioner training model.

JOB DUTIES:

Complete comprehensive educational and psychological evaluations:

  • Administer, score and interpret norm-referenced assessments of cognitive ability, academic skills, language and motor development, attention, anxiety, mood, behavior, and personality
  • Conduct clinical interviews with parents and students
  • Distribute, collect, score, and interpret standardized rating forms
  • Carry out structured in-school observations of students
  • Review records and teacher/provider feedback
  • Conceptualize gathered data to write clear diagnostic reports with individualized recommendations
  • Provide collaborative and compassionate feedback to parents

Supervise clinical psychology doctoral students:

  • In cooperation with the Clinical Director, provide an organized sequence of training to qualified psychology aides and assistants
  • Instruct and assist doctoral students in all aspects of conducting comprehensive educational and psychological evaluations
  • Prepare trainees to manage assessment cases with increasing independence
  • Create and maintain collaborative relationships with supervisees to promote competency
  • Clearly communicate supervision expectations, standards, goals, and tasks
  • Regularly review supervisees’ progress through ongoing formative and summative evaluation, provide feedback on performance, and address issues that arise
  • Maintain accurate and timely supervision documentation

Provide screenings and consultations to parents and students:

  • Frequently complete scheduled phone consultations with parents to determine and recommend best course of action for student
  • Regularly administer reading and ADHD screenings to scheduled students and provide immediate and informative feedback on screening results to parents
  • Review student records in-depth and provide clarification of prior evaluation results to families, verbally and in writing when necessary

Consult with faculty, staff, administrators, and other professionals:

  • Serve on Lawrence School’s Crisis Response Team
  • Offer guidance on student mental health needs, and attend internal meetings and parent conferences
  • Observe Lawrence students and review their profiles to suggest strategies for teachers and administrators to implement
  • Advise Lawrence School’s Office of Admissions on prospective students’ academic and support needs

Advance the Schafer Center’s role as a regional and national resource:

  • Work closely with the Administrative Coordinator, Clinical Director, and other team members to develop and deliver community education and professional development opportunities
  • Assist in efforts to develop, analyze, write and disseminate research based on data collected through the Schafer Center and Lawrence School

This position reports to the Clinical Director of the Schafer Center and assists in all day-to-day operations, as outlined above. Additional duties and tasks (including coverage of the Clinical Director’s responsibilities when needed) may be assigned.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS:

  • An intrinsic desire to celebrate students who learn differently and support their growth
  • Doctorate degree in psychology
  • Independent license in the state of Ohio as a psychologist is required (or immediately license-eligible in Ohio within 6-months of employment)
  • Solid knowledge of and experience with psychological testing
  • 1-2 years of experience working with children and adolescents with learning, behavioral, and/or mood disorders
  • Effective consultation skills for interacting with students, parents, families, teachers, administrators, and outside professionals
  • Strong written, verbal, organizational, and interpersonal skills
  • Attention to detail/accuracy, timely implementation, and quality performance
  • The ability to consistently exercise discretion and sound judgment
  • An eagerness to learn and elevate the mission of Lawrence School and the Schafer Center for Learning Differences

SCHEDULE:

Twelve-month position that follows school year calendar days off. Occasional evening hours.
Four-days/week (TBD Monday-Friday), 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Expected start date August 2023
